November 05, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tips for Riding a Motorcycle Safely on New York Roads
Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous, with nothing except a helmet separating riders from the road. However, many motorcyclists accept these risks to experience the joy of the open road.
According to a report done by the Institute for Traffic Safety and Research, the number of motorcycle accidents in New York has been decreasing, but the numbers are not nearly as low as they could be. For example, there were 5,426 accidents involving cyclists in 2007, 5,396 in 2008, and 5,150 in 2009.
This data demonstrates the importance of reviewing motorcycle safety tips as often as possible, and then utilizing those tips on the road.
Important Motorcycle Safety Advice
It can be difficult for trucks and cars to see motorcycles in their review mirrors or as they approach an intersection. Due to their size, motorcycles often hide in a car's blind-spot and can seem father away then they actually are. For these reasons, cyclists must be extra careful on the road to avoid accidents, and should keep the following in mind:
-Driver's Head Movement: The movement of a car driver's head can be an indication they may make a sudden move or are preparing to change lanes
-Off Ramps: Cars which decide to exit at the last second cause many accidents each year and pose a substantial risk to cyclists
-Surface Awareness: Motorcyclists should constantly survey the road for sand, debris or any slippery substance which might make stopping more difficult
-Protective Gear: Cyclists should, at a minimum, wear a proper fitting helmet (although other safety gear is advised)
-Utilize Headlights: Use the "bright" setting on headlights as necessary to make a cycle more visible
There are many more tips bikers should know and follow to ensure their safetyon the roads. The State of New York recommends that cyclists sharpen their abilities by attending motorcycle safety classes or receiving formal training from a professional.
Unfortunately, even the most careful motorcycle riders know they can be injured in an accident. Anyone who has been hurt in a motorcycle accident should contact an experienced motorcycle accident attorney immediately to discuss their options and potential legal claims.
