New York Civil Rights Violation Lawyer from The Perecman Firm Comments on Appearance of Police Abuse of Power in Case of Student Held 36 Hours for Lack of ID
New York civil rights violation lawyer from The Perecman Firm comments on appearance of police abuse of power in case of student held 36 hours for lack of ID.
NEW YORK, NY, November 20, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The arrest of 20-year old Samantha Zucker spotlighted the fine line between a legal arrest and unnecessary New York police abuse of power.
New York civil rights violation lawyers understand Zucker and a friend were stopped by police after New York's Riverside Park had closed and were ticketed for trespassing. Her friend showed his ID and was allowed to leave, but Zucker had left her wallet at a hotel. Police then arrested her and held for 36 hours before the judge dismissed the ticket in "less than a minute."
"Police officers have been given great power by the public in order to do their jobs properly. Incidents of New York civil rights violation and, even ones that hint at civil rights violation, erode the public's trust that police should have this power. Officers need a common sense approach," said New York civil rights violation lawyer David Perecman, a New York civil rights violation lawyer for over 30 years.
Zucker wanted to ask someone to bring her identification, but a policeman said, "it was too late for that," reported The New York Times.
According to Zucker, other officers were shocked that she had not been given a chance to have a friend fetch her ID.
However, she also astutely observed that no officers "had the courage to stand up against what they knew was a poor decision."
If a person suspects that he or she has been a victim of false arrest, police brutality, or other civil rights violation, he or she should contact an experienced New York civil rights violation lawyer.
